Very mind opening. First hand American accounts are much more enlivening than news stories and this one is by far one of the best I've seen!
i was recommended this via a friend who had read it and found it a very interesting insight into life being lived in a different land and culture at what i would term the 'ground level'. Very well written with some true insight and emotion.

The author offers a multidimensional trip to Arab lands and achieves to transport the reader to experience a latent war through the atmosphere of tension, chaos and violence Lebaneses have on daily basis. Complex political-religious state, coexistence of different religious denominations, and the peculiarities of cultural daily encounters make this a thriller sometimes. The biblical analysis and the richness of the historical research make this piece a deep colorful and enjoyable experience.
This book is perhaps one of the greatest introductions into Lebanon and the culture of its people. Understanding the "masks" of what is-- may not be, lends itself to a deeper truth in the world we live in. Deception, the glory of truth, the perils of journeying through life dimly...it's all there!I shared the book with a dear Lebanese friend of mine and she applauded Eric's masterful use of clarity mixed with ambiguity and his portrayal of life there. Eric has captured the light and dark of Lebanon and the intrigue of the Middle East...leaves me wanting a sequel.

Having just finished reading A Year in Tyr, I can say it was good, and I'm glad to have read it. For me, the day-to-day approach made it a bit of a slog, but worthwhile because I ended up feeling like I'd actually been to Lebanon myself. Probably my favorite part of this book was its insights about denominationalism how prevalent it really is -- not just in Lebanon, but in the entire world -- and how easily it can mask the idea that "everything's fine" when it's not. If this book helps pull that mask off, then it will have really done something to engage people in honest conversation about hard things.
Growing up in the 50s, everyone spoke of Lebanon like being a paradyse. Every one should read that book to understand that cultures, people, are so different. I am glad I read it because I had the tendency to reflect on a past that is long gone. It is written by someone who lived daily there, not for a holiday in a resort where all looks great. Well written, easy to read, very interesting and revealing.
Strikes me as personal, candid, engrossing, plenty of fun, scary, and spiked with fascinating history I won't get any other way.
Slog...good crossword word, but not appropriate. Instead you have chosen an episodic approach that says to me..."Reader, be patient, if this segment of the book does not interest you, there's surprise and cunningness just ahead in the next few pages or less." No slog here!
Oh yes, for me you paint word pictures, a special gift. Causes me to want to be by your side despite the uncertainties and "masks" you encounter hour to hour.
Could this be the first in a series? You've shown you can narrate with crisp sentences and light hearted dialog?
